New to Orienteering?
A step-by-step guide to choosing the right course
1
Age Categories
(Competitive Classes)
Age categories are based on age and gender. Participants are ranked against others in the same category.
Examples:
-
M35+ = Men age 35 and older
-
F45+ = Woman age 45 and older
-
M17-18 = Men age 17-18
Understand the Category Options
There are two ways to enter: Age Categories and Open Categories
Experienced participants may choose to run up into a more challenging category.
Example:
A 38-year-old beginner would normally be eligible for F35+, which is assigned to Course 7. However, they could choose Open Course 3 and complete the same course as the competitors assigned to Course 3.
Open Categories
(Open to All Participants)
Open categories are available to everyone regardless of age or gender. They provide a flexible way to choose a course that matches your experience level.
Open participants complete the same courses but are not ranked within an age category.
Open is often the best choice for:
-
Newcomers
-
Families
-
Groups participating together
-
Participants who prefer a less challenging course than the one assigned to their age category

Understand the Technical Difficulty
Each course has a Technical Difficulty (TD) rating from 1-5
Designed for newcomers to orienteering. Courses follow marked or easy-to-follow trails, with controls located on or very near trails. Basic map reading is all that is required.
Primarily follows trails and other obvious linear features. Simple route choices may be required. Slightly more challenging than TD1, with longer legs.
Introduces off-trail navigation and basic compass use. Participants must navigate to larger, distinct terrain features and make straightforward route choices.
Participants must make route choices through a variety of terrain. Strong navigation skills are required. Similar to TD5, but shorter and less physically demanding.
Features complex route choices, detailed terrain, and challenging control locations. Requires precise navigation, strong compass skills, and physical stamina.
